Having read most of this thread and joined in fair bit of it (usually on the
opposite side to Helen), I'd say that she's fervent, but not blind.

As far as I'm aware, she recognises Avon's flaws along with the rest of us. We
don't expect him to be a saint, because he wasn't. He was cynical, pragmatic
and occasionally capable of extreme self-sacrifice. Which of those came to the
fore on any particular occasion depended on many factors.

If you were one of the few people he was willing to die for (like Anna) then you
were safe anywhere with him (safe in the sense that he would not intentionally
take you into danger and would risk all to get you out of it). If you weren't,
then the risk increased in many different ways.

There were risks he would take for the entire crew that he would not always take
for an individual member of it.

For Avon, choosing to die with Vila, when he knew that one of them could live,
was not an option. Another character like Dayna might have chosen to draw lots
to see who lived, but then killing came easily to Dayna, so I don't know for
sure that she wouldn't have taken Avon's route (though Scorpio's crew were a
substitute family to her, so I don't think she would have tried to kill in
Vila's case). I'm not sure that we're trying to determine whether Avon was
right or wrong in deciding to live; we're more trying to work out what drives
him to a decision and what decision he would make in any particular case.

Tarrant might well have chosen the 'die together' option. Dawn of the Gods
suggests this. (Though I'd happily shoot the script writer for making Avon so
stupid as to think he could survive a black hole by being a in space suit!)

Whether that option is 'better' or 'worse' is probably a discussion more suited
to the spin list.

HazMat technicians arrive at the Patera residence and confiscate
container of grape soda. HazMat technician reads label on side of
container. "As we suspected! Active ingredient: eye of troll." Addressing
Pat: "Ma'am, didn't you read the warning on the side? It says right here

cause dizziness, hallucinations, and distorted vision. Do not ingest

Sue, unable to locate the character Pat was decribing in my set of Blake's
7 tapes. Although Travis fits many of the particulars.

There is need for both kinds of rebel activity, and other kinds
besides, like people to organize on the planetary level and prepare for
the aftermath. One person can't, and shouldn't, be doing all of them.
Blake is doing his part, Avalon is doing hers, Shivan, Cauder, Kasabi,
Grant, LeGrand and others are doing theirs. Blake is part of a larger
movement, not acting in a vacuum (space puns aside).

Actually, SPs are the ones who dominate the computer and technical fields.
In fact, the Internet is an extremely SP tool. SPs love information and
resources, which is what the Internet is. It is also a very freedom
oriented thing. You can say pretty much anything on the Internet because it
is almost impossible to control and censor the entire world on the
Internet. But the reason NTs end up quite a bit on lists such as these is
because NTs enjoy long, drawn-out discussion. You can pretty much tell an
SP from their e-mails. They hate writing a lot because it's not thrilling
enough for them. They are the ones who coin phrases such as FAQ, BRB, FYI,
etc. They do it to cut down on the time it takes them to write a sentence.
They want it fast and easy, which is why they are often no fun to write
back and forth with on the Internet. So, this is why NTs are more common in
areas where a lot of writing is required, such as digests and lists.

Well I am an extrovert (ENTP) and I *love* Vila. I'm absurdly far gone in
that direction.

Tramila, perhaps I haven't made the point strongly enough on this list
(because it's a mixed type of list) but you are *certainly* not alone. All
that stuff about chucking Vila out the airlock doesn't mean I don't love
him.

I always wonder - do we prefer a character because they are like us, or
because they are different? I sometimes think I like Vila just because he
is different from me.

I know Hanneke tends to lurk on this list, so I hope she doesn't mind me
recommending this site, which she brought to our attention on the other
list.

http://www.meteo.physik.uni-muenchen.de/theorie/paul/blakes7.html

I don't know if you have seen this one - I hadn't found it during my trawls
for B7 stuff. Perhaps it is rather new. Anyway - they are very high quality
screen shots. Unlike Lisa's excellent site he hasn't referenced the
pictures to speech and incident - but it is still a very good site.

The reason I *had* to mention it now is because there really are some
excellent Vila pictures there. Check out 407g and 411a, which are among the
best I have ever seen, and I think the latter is a picture of Vila telling
Avon off for trying to chuck him out the airlock - so it is fairly relevant
to current discussions.

Oh, and the guy who runs the site is obviously keen on Soolin, so if you
like the ice maiden, look no further.

Seconded - wholeheartedly. Someone who quite happily *shares* Paul at
conventions and theatres with fans (well she does get to take him home
afterwards!!). She isn`t patronising when talking to you, even though
she knows, and you know she knows, that you are there (conventions or
theatres) purely because you *fancy/love/lust/drool* (if they are the
correct terms :-)) after her husband.

I think we like a character because they are different from us. I would
like to be more like my favourite. *Not* exactly like him, no way, but
more like him. For example, with Avon and Vila, I'd love to be able come
up with the put downs and one liners that they do. But it's hours later
that I think of something witty. Of course the writers probably sat around
for hours thinking that stuff up, so I don't feel so bad. We'd also like
to be able to get away with some of the stuff the characters do (this goes
for any character), but in real life, that's just not possible.

Except that in every fandom I've ever been in, the characters I like best
are the characters who are =most= like me. B7's no exception. I'm a diehard
Vila fan, and while Vila and I have huge points of difference (like, the
room party at the second Vidcon aside, I really don't drink much; other
people's property is safe around me, etc.), I'm the most like Vila.

This holds true in other fandoms as well; some characters are,
personality-wise, near exact matches (there's one character in particular
who, 99% of the time, I can write by thinking "What would =I= do?"), and
some are farther off, but all in all, the characters I like are ones I feel
a strong sense of identification with.

My boyfriend does that, and he's an...oh I can't remember the
letters, but it was the one they called "Councellor". He calls it
being on stage - did you mean actual acting or acting the part of an
extrovert?

I'd love for Avon to love me! It's his single mindedness, that focus
you feel he could bring to, well, sex really (blush). It's also the
whole pygmalion complex - I could make him happier, I could make him
trust himself and me, etc, etc, etc. And that spice of danger - a
recipe for "Live fast, die young, leave a beautiful corpse" but who
cares! I proudly wear the badge of A.S.S. (should the two ss stand
for Sex Slave?)

I love Vila, but in a completely platonic way. I'd love his company,
I'm sure he would be a lech, but I don't actually have a problem with
people who lech in the way he does (and I do know a few). In fact
they can be fun, if you just take it as a compliment, and tease them.
I think I could get very close to Vila, but the lack of lust probably
prohibits me from joining the V.I.C.E. (sniff).

Blake is second in the lust stakes for me - very large (to me, I'm
only 5'2") protective bear of a man, he looks strong too, and he's
*nice*, with far too much charisma to be left languishing in the
platonic zone. Probably not devoted enough to be a B.I.T.C.H. though.

Mind you, Tarrant has fantastic eyes, a great smile, sex appeal so
strong you could strip paint with it, and now he's older he has a
*much* nicer body (I've seen him without his shirt on last week! hee
hee). hmmm Tarrant Nostra here I come.

OH NO! now that's sitting on the fence with a vengance! Are they all
mutually exclusive?

Do you realise that the weapon rules at Deliverance will make it the only
convention I've ever been to where I can't walk around with my Liberator gun?
Ironic. According to my reading of the regulations, you can only carry replica
weapons (of any kind) during the fancy dress competition, and then only with
permission. I'm going to check that I've read it correctly, but it does seem
rather depressing.

Tramila peels the false label that Sue placed over the grape label in order to
confusual Pat. Tramila shakes her head. Yelp. She's a B.I.T.C.H. all

It's quite a common rule, and becoming more common. Or maybe it's
just more common in U.S. conventions. I think it's more common at
really big conventions, where they are more afraid of things going
wrong, or more afraid of jumpy people getting upset at people walking
around with weapons.

It *is* depressing - I bought my Liberator handgun ages ago, and I
still haven't worn it to a single convention! At least teleport
bracelets aren't weapons. I considered it very ironic that there I
was at a US convention (probably Worldcon) drooling over the swords in
the dealers room, and realized it was pointless buying one, because I
would never be able to wear it. However, I got a brilliant idea - I'm
going to use the Gandalf defence this time around - a staff isn't a
weapon!

I guess with me it's opposites that attract in fandom. In real life hubby
and I are nearly identical in manner, temporament, etc. So much so that at
times it gets kind of boring. Which, I think is why I like my fictional
characters to be different. I'd love to go off following an Avon (or even
a Blake) type, if that was ever possible, but in reality I probably
wouldn't and stick to the safety of my four walls and dear hubby.:-)

Maybe, I found with some of those statements I really wouldn't have acted

I have been completely in the dark about this Meyers-Briggs testing until
today when I could read over my messages properly. This has been a busy
week! Anyway, I went to take the Keirsey Temperament Sorter, and I'm an
INFP. So I now know that I would be completely incompatible to Avon
because two introverts just don't mix. This also follows up on results
from Dr. Love as well! Damn! But I do like the INFP fact page, it's quite
right in my opinion.

I suppose now I'm going to have to scratch up the reason for my
fascination with Avon purely on his body! ; \

Due to the need to clear out at least one closet before April, I'm having
to sell off some zines. Most of them are all-B7 zines, lots of gen stuff
but also adult zines, and a few in other fandoms.

If you want the list, e-mail me privately.

Thanks.

Is it the _idea_ of the thing being a weapon that con organisers are
worried about? I can see the point with real or close-to-real-replica
swords, etc, or weapons that look like a real handgun or somesuch - there
could certainly be an incident involving thoughtless behaviour with that
sort of thing. As far as injuring someone, you could just as easily damage
someone with a heavy book as with a Liberator handgun replica.
Just curious

Yes, the only characters to ever die are the guest stars, crewmen with
redshirts, or characters that want to be written out (in which case we know
months in advance, anyway). Of the original Blake's 7 crew, only Vila and
Avon remained--now that's realistic! Whereas in Trek, I'm supposed to
believe that no one gets reassigned, dies, or is promoted to their own
damned command. No wonder I was starved for what Blake's 7 and Babylon 5
provide, I was raised on Trek! (At this point, I would like to say that
there were good episodes of Trek, BUT NOT AS MANY AS BLAKE'S 7!!!! :)

A novel. Sort of a sci-fi/horror hybrid. Of course, I haven't seemed to
get all of the writing that I want to do on this list out of my system yet,
so lurking will have to wait a little longer I suppose.

Judith, fear not! The weapons rule at Deliverance ends with the proviso:
"Of course, if in the best B7 tradition, it actually looks like a hairdryer
or curling tongs, that's fine."
Liberator guns will fall into this category, I feel. The intention is not
to not to stop people carrying obviously fake 'ray guns', but to stop them
carrying not-so-obviously-fake replicas of modern guns, which can scare the
hell out of people who don't know you're at a convention in fancy dress.

Definitely not, at least not as far as the Tarrant Nostra is concerned.
Many of our members list characters other than Tarrant as their
