All of my bamboos are in containers, clumpers work best but runners do fine their runners just tend to go round and round looking for a way out. I have never have any container break. I do pull them out every year or so and hack off a bunch of the root mass; if you do not they get very hard to water. Many types make neat indoor plants too.
