At the moment the chain includes: Christopher Kakkos (Gre) Timo Riitamaa (Fin) Johan Helmstad (Swe) Lisa Melleg[character that didn't come out properly]rd (Swe) Isabella Lundgren (Swe) Michael Rehnstrom (Swe) Leif Larsen (USA) Chris Forsberg (USA) If each person tells the list when they receive the tape (which is a C60 by the way), then anyone who might want to be added to it will know who to contact. I'll post it off to you in a day or so, Christopher, together with Timo's Finnhits tape. Hope you all like it! I'd not heard any of these bands before, apart from 22-Pistepirkko, so didn't know what to expect... some of the more garagey-racket stuff I'm not very into, but there are plenty of gems among the rest. 22-Pistepirkko should be stars in the US, Timo is absolutely right. I like Pavement, but 22-PP do the same sort of thing a lot more interestingly. CMX's 'Harjat' is Goth-rock in my book, and good stuff too (anyone remember a Goth band from Tampere called Two Witches? I heard an excellent song of theirs years ago and always wondered if they'd done anything else). Rinneradio's 'Aromaa Alt Too' is fine moody trip-hop, I like it a lot lot lot. Aavikko - now this is strange music, a sort of demented circus barrel-organ pumping out tunes of doom and despair. The two Circle tracks are excellent, especially the second 'Brilliant Colours for Bright Ideas'. Thanks Timo! I suppose it's about the right size for certain bands. And there aren't too many other "medium" sized venues in Gothenburg - so that's definiatly nice. Anyway, I now know that Eggstone will also play at Underground on February 20th (as Erik believed) and not on the 21th as Underground (and I) announced earlier. Unless Eggstone are going to cancel that date of course. The two Circle tracks >are excellent, especially the second 'Brilliant Colours for Bright Ideas'. Whow! never heard anybody call CMX goth..... are you sure it was a Two Witches song you heard? i've always thought of the music as really boring, and i've never heard anything good about them. and it's not because i would think all goth is boring. not even my goth friends like them. i've always thought of it as just a compilation of goth clishes (sp?) i've got a comp. album called Runeberginkatu 8 (the legendary Oskun Divari record store is there), and it's got a Two Witches song. their instruments are listed as: "monster bass", "pitiless drums", "psychotic guitars", "backin' weeping", "lead howling", and "creepy synth+backin' screams". not kidding! If you like that Circle song you should get "Zopalki". their new "Hissi" is a lot more krautrock oriented. The new Moshable kicks booty! Unfortunately, the rep is mostly correct. Compared to the shitloads of cool bands from Sweden, Norway and especially Finland, we have extremely few really good bands. But I'd like to mention one of the better releases: Shake Appeal: Praying for a little luck 7" (Karls Grammofonpladeselskab) Local heroes from Aalborg with their first 7" and a passion for loud, fast and funny. This is garage rock with a vengeance, heavily influenced by old Stooges stuff and my favourite garage band New Bomb Turks. Definitely worth a listen, and one of the best livebands from Aalborg ever. Actually, Shake appeal is opening act for Swedish Hellacopters at 1000fryd tomorrow (1000fryd is the best and the only underground music venue in Aalborg). I heard Hellacopters "Supershitty to the max" (I think) on tape recently, it definitely made me look forward to the show. Anyways, do you discuss bands like Hellacopters, Brainbombs, Sweetheart, Turboneger and so on on this list? I didn't recognise any of the bands in the "indie index" on the homepage, except for bob hund and cardigans. js PS: Check the homepage of 1000fryd at http://www.kom.auc.dk/~js/fryd/ unfortunately it's in Danish and a bit boring, but check the list of bands that played last year: Lost of great scandinavian stuff! --------------------------- Date: Wed, 12 Feb 1997 17:51:35 +0100 From: Michael Rehnstrom Subject: Finnhits + questions Nice to see that there is life on the list, I was beginning to wonder. I have three topics to bring up. Let us begin with the Finnhits tape: I liked this tape. It sounded just as strange and different as I would have expected from a finnish collection. I have no idea of why the organ sounds of the 70s has managed to survive in Finland but I sure like bands like 22-Pistepirkko (on this tape especially "Wild Billy"), The Cybermen and Larry & The Lefthanded. I also liked CMX, but I do not know if I would call it goth (but I am not very familiar with the goth scene). And if Aavikko really was a cirkus orchestra (which they sounded like in the second tune) I would probably spend a lot of money visiting finnish cirkuses. When it comes to Sweetheart and Circle I have forgot them, so I guess that is a good sign that I did not really like them. Rinneradio is doing music in a way I usually like, but I think I have heard other bands performing it better. But overall, a good tape! Then I have two questions. First of all, I am trying to do some research about a band called Baines. Since this is a Linkoping band I should know about them and I also have seen them live. But I want to know more, so if anyone has any information about them (record labels, records/cassettes, everything), do not hesitate! Question no two: My old hometown, Vastervik, has not really made much noise in the music world (except for being the birth place of Bjorn in ABBA, I guess). But in the mid-80s there was a band, from Vastervik, which I liked a lot. Perhaps I would think they are crap if I heard their music today, my definition of good music has changed a bit since and I do not really remember how they sounded. But still, I wonder if someone has any recorded material with them. Their name was New Echo and they played instrumental synth music, one song was called "Funeral" I remember. And if anyone knows about them, please tell me: were they good? /Micke, really admiring those who have spent time reading all of this mail ----------------------------- Date: Wed, 12 Feb 1997 20:26:29 +0100 From: akesson@canit.se (Olof Akesson) Subject: Re: Hi all (from a newbie) >Shake Appeal: Praying for a little luck 7" (Karls Grammofonpladeselskab) >Local heroes from Aalborg with their first 7" and a passion for loud, fast >and funny. I'm working on getting a tape with a bunch of Danish indie bands from the Danish radio channel P3 program "Beat!" people which will later be sent out on a tape chain, but it seems to take some time before that happens, so if you have the time / want to make such a tape for a chain, I think we'll all be interested! The guys at "Beat!" mentioned Danish bands like Ibens, Lovebites, Kashmir, Port Friendly, Vildensky, Bloom, Obstinate Esther, and Subcircus, but I haven't heard any of these! > Anyways, do you discuss bands like Hellacopters, Brainbombs, Sweetheart, > Turboneger and so on on this list? Anything goes, though as a rule, if you want to talk about something not dealing with Scandinavia in any way, put "Non-Scan:" before your subject. The "indie index" isn't anything to be bothered about, because that page has been there for almost two years now, looking like that. One day, it will be the "indie index" it was meant to be, but not until I get enough time to complete the work on it. //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Feb 1997 05:39:11 +0100 (MET) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Sin's Upcoming Promotion Visits [14-Feb-97] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie UPCOMING PROMOTION VISITS Scandinavian Indie February 14th, 1997 by Erik Soderstrom (chief@lysator.liu.se) Tip: Watch out for the Chemical Brothers appearing unannounced somewhere this weekend... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist/Band Rec.Label When Where ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alisha's Attic (Polygram) 19/2 Stockholm Backstreet Boys (Virgin) 15/2 Stockholm (w/gig) Chemical Brothers (Virgin) 14-15/2 Stockholm, ? Not that I don't want to, but I'm not too crazy about Danish indie, so I buy very few new records. I have none from the bands you mentioned. js -------------------------------- Date: Fri, 14 Feb 1997 18:31:00 +0100 From: Michael Rehnstrom Subject: Pluxus + Non-scan I am not exactly overwhelmed with the response to my questions about Baines and New Echo so far, but I make another try with another band: Pluxus. As far as I know, Slowball Recordings (which seems to be a reliable company) has released a C-60 tape with Pluxus, which I think is a swedish band. I was just wondering if someone could tell me what kind of music to expect from this band, so I get a hint on whether it is worth investing in the tape. As I said, I trust Slowball, but I have never heard Pluxus before, so I would like some info about them before I buy the tape. Non-scan: It was several months since the last time I had that stupid-looking (more than usual, that is) smile all over my face. Yesterday, towards the end of the Gallon Drunk (UK) gig at Herrgarn, I realized that it was there again. Such a brilliant gig that to miss them, when they play at a venue near you, would probably be among the most stupid things you have ever done. I think they can get even better - the saxophone player of Moonshake (who used to be a member of Gallon Drunk) had told the people at Herrgarn that Gallon Drunk perform their best gigs when they are really pissed off, but i saw them smile several times yesterday, so please tell me when they are really mad and I will come right away (sounds more like a threat than a promise, I guess)! That was all, Cheers! /Micke ----------------------------- Date: Fri, 14 Feb 1997 19:07:28 +0100 From: Christer Nilsson Subject: Re: Pluxus > As far as I know, Slowball Recordings (which seems to be a reliable > company) has released a C-60 tape with Pluxus, which I think is a swedish > band. As I said, I trust Slowball, but I have never heard Pluxus > before, so I would like some info about them before I buy the tape. i've only heard the song on the slowball 'in release city'-tape, and it didn't excite me that much. but i'll get it anyway (support your local indie-label!). it's called pluxus - "music inspired by the architecture of kennedy international airport". and according to slowball it has "the coolest beats in sweden, nice analogue and digital keyboards, and nice guitars. much better than the pluxus song on release city". -christer ---------------------------- Date: Fri, 14 Feb 1997 19:26:09 +0100 (MET) From: Johan Subject: Re: Sin's Upcoming Promotion Visits [14-Feb-97] At 08.12 1997-02-14 +0100, Rami Nihlawi wrote: >> Tip: Watch out for the Chemical Brothers appearing unannounced somewhere >> this weekend... > >The Chemical Brothers are playing at Allhuset, Stockholm Univeristy, this >Saturday!
